Building Mass Pattern At Jibma Traditional Market In Wamena Papua Mountains Province

Abstract

The Jibama Traditional Market, located in Wamena, Papua Highlands, plays a vital role in supporting the local economy and serving as a cultural hub for the surrounding community. However, the market's current condition, characterized by poor maintenance, suboptimal spatial planning, and unsupportive social behaviors, has reduced its function as a comfortable and secure trading center. This study aims to redesign the Jibama Market using ecological and traditional architectural approaches to create a more sustainable market environment. The methodology involves descriptive analysis of the site, circulation, vegetation, utilities, and spatial needs. The results highlight the importance of implementing a design inspired by local forms, such as the traditional honai houses, while considering efficient lighting, ventilation, and waste management. Proposed solutions include the use of eco-friendly materials, renewable energy systems, and reorganization of activity zones to enhance the market's comfort, safety, and appeal. With this new design, Jibama Market is expected to become a model for modern traditional markets that promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
