The city of Makassar, as the gateway to Eastern Indonesia, has positioned itself as not only one of the busiest trading hubs in Indonesia but also a thriving center for manufacturing, particularly in the shipbuilding industry owned by the state under the name PT. Industri Kapal Indonesia. PT. Industri Kapal Indonesia is engaged in ship manufacturing and manufacturing, employing hundreds of blue-collar workers with low economic status. Many of these workers lack proper housing, residing in rented accommodations within the slum areas near PT. Industri Kapal Indonesia. This emphasizes the importance of employee apartments for the workers of PT. Industri Kapal Indonesia. Employee apartments serve not only as residences but also as an effort to preserve and appreciate the existence of local identity in buildings. The application of batik motifs in architecture can be realized by incorporating them into the building. To incorporate batik motifs into the facade material layers of the building, visual perception is involved. One influencing factor is light, considering that Indonesia is consistently illuminated by sunlight throughout the year. Natural sunlight often illuminates buildings excessively, requiring additional
material layers in the building facade to ensure the comfort of the users. This effort is made to honor the existence of batik in architecture by integrating batik motifs as the design for material layers on the building facade. Thus, the local identity of the building is expected to be visible. In the upcoming study process, several stages will be conducted, including literature review, operational parameter determination, comparison with buildings implementing a double-skin facade with batik motifs, until criteria or recommendations for batik motifs applicable to the design of building facade material layers are established. The Makassar and Mandar batik motifs are chosen because their designs are expected to represent the local identity of buildings in South.
